Artist on Blog: Clifford Remolador

The world is small and it is getting smaller everyday. I happen to know Clifford (kuya cliff to me) through a very good friend of mine, friend L. I never thought that when she introduced Clifford that we actually belonged to the same alma mater. Another UP Cebu graduate of Fine Arts. He has been a good friend together with friend L that I am so grateful to have made their acquaintance. Clifford is such a silent guy but beneath the silent facade runs the heart of a true artist and a musician at that. But wait, there is more he is also into website design and so many other things that with him his talent just overflows. Very, very talented and good person. He is my artist feature for this week.

kuyacliffName: Clifford Remolador

Lives in: Lapu-Lapu Cebu

And here is our Q&A part…

Where do you get inspiration for your art?

Clifford: My art is inspired by the conditions of the people, as well as their struggles and triumphs.

What do you hope to do or inspire with your art?

Clifford: As an artist and activist, it is a responsibility to ignite the consciousness of the people – especially the masses – regarding the country’s economic conditions. I hope to organize fellow artists – not only from my lines of expertise (visual arts and music) but also from other artistic disciplines – and inspire them to use their creative talents as a medium to encourage people to become more aware, conscious, critical and progressive.

Which artists influence/d your art?

Clifford: For visual arts, my style was influenced by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, and Munch. From our local artists, I also like the works of Malang, Botong Francisco, Martino Abellana, Romulo Galicano, and Raymund Fernandez. As for the theme, I’m more influenced with works of social realist painters like Diego Rivera.

For music, my influences include The Beatles, Rolling Stones, U2, Antonio Forcione, Carlos Santana, Slash, Gary, Granada, Joey Ayala, The Jerks, and Yano.

All of his website design projects are still in construction and I will post the websites later on after they have been finished.

Francis Magalona dies at 44

va-rappublic_vol2Our master rapper and stalwart Filipino musician/artist just died at the age of 44 leaving behind him wife, Pia and their kids. He died at the age of 44. He died today at 12:20PM at the Medical City in Mandaluyong. He was already undergoing several chemotheraphy sessions since he was diagnosed with leukemia last year. He had become too weak to fight it. He died of sepsis as a complication of his leukemia. He will be sorely missed and I will forever remember him being the father of Filipino rap and being very proud of his country…

Adieu Francis M., you are going to a better place. May his soul rest in peace.

Artist on Blog: Ana Knicolai Mendoza

Here is my featured artist for the week, also one of my very good friends way back in college up til l now. Ana, and by the way I call her Ate Ana. Hahahahha! (it’s a long standing joke between me and her). She is one of those people I can call artists, in the sense that she reinvents herself in other mediums aside from her paintings. She also does body art and she is also a big supporter of local artists( painters, bands and etc.).

Here is her factbit:

Name: Sigwada Knicolai Mendoza but she is more known as Ana Mendoza ( Ate Ana, did I get your name right?) :) angels1

Nationality: Filipino

Lives in: Metro Manila

Like me and friend Paul we all studied in the University of the Philippines Cebu College and of course became friends there.

The object of her paintings has always been angels. Angels of all kinds. Her artist statement is “I Dream of Imperfection, for when dreams come out stained but not stale for me it is art.” I was not able to ask her my 3 question factbit like Paul but if you visit her website you will get everything from there. So please do visit Ana’s site at www.sigwadaknicolai.tk.

Do take time out to check out her artworks. She is currently showing her art together with some other artists at the Blue Line Gallery Rustans at Ayala Avenue until the 27th of February entitled SUBLIMINAL COSMOS. If you are based in Manila, do check them out if you have time.

Artist on Blog: Paul Villa Arenas

I’ve always had this admiration for local artists and I’ve thought up a way to feature them here in my blog. By merely, having them answer 3 questions that I have randomly thought of. Our artist of the week is someone that I have had the good fortune to meet and hang out with. I have always liked his art and his mediums and way back in college I was actually a little bit afraid of him because he was a huge giant of a guy and still is but I have gotten to know him as a friend and would like to feature his art here for everyone who reads my blogs.

paularenas_57733_uploadFull Name: Paul Henry Villa Arenas

Born: May 1, 1979

Nationality: Filipino

Lives in: 64 C Gorordo Avenue Cebu City

Here is also a 3 question factbit ( my own lingo for small facts) that I managed to wiggle out of him while chatting in the internet.

EV: “Paul, where do you get inspiration from your art?”

Paul: “Anywhere”

EV: “What do you hope to do or inspire with the art that you make?”

Paul: “This is a tough one. Well I used to be conscious on its purpose like in college where a panel of judges throws this type of questions. But right now, its just whatever – more of finding myself and hopefully suprise myself. But I’m currently trying to follow Kandinsky’s concept of abstract – like make the viewer feel the elements in a subtlest way ever.”

EV: “Which artists influenced your art?”

Paul: “For techniques – picasso, nune alvarado and ang kiokok; For aesthetic content – Kandinsky; and the rest is up to me…”

There you have it ladies and gents from my friend Paulie!!! Please do visit his website where his art is showcased. Just click on PAUL ARENAS ART.

Thanks Paul for the interesting conversation…until the next time and more power to local artists. If I had the money, I’ll make sure to buy some from you Tweedledee!!!

Patronize our own Filipino artists guys!!!
